EFM32 Tiny Gecko receives EDN Innovation Award

Energy Micro wins EDN China Innovation award for low power Tiny Gecko microcontroller

Oslo, Norway, December 2, 2011 – Energy Micro, the energy friendly microcontroller and radio company, has won the Leading Product Award for its ARM® Cortex-M3™ based Tiny Gecko EFM32 low power microcontroller in the Embedded Systems category of the EDN China Innovation Awards 2011.

Now in their 7th year, the annual innovation awards were this year voted for by registered users from EDN China’s 400,000-strong on-line community, according to selection criteria including technological innovation and market influence. A panel of technical experts and senior EDN editors reviewed the voting across nine different technology categories and selected the final award winners.

Andrea Marchi, Energy Micro’s VP of Sales and Marketing for the Asia Pacific region said, "With the winners being voted for by electronic design engineers and managers across China, the Leading Product award is a significant endorsement of the breakthrough Energy Micro EFM32 Gecko architecture and products which are being selected by a rapidly increasing number of designers in China and all over the world."

"The Tiny Gecko microcontroller, which EDN China readers have specifically voted for in the Leading Product award, is capable of using a quarter of the energy of rival 8-, 16- and 32-bit microcontrollers. Its combination of extremely low current consumption of 160µA/MHz in active mode down to 20nA in shut off mode, very fast wake up time of 2µs and unique energy efficient peripheral architecture means developers can dramatically increase battery lifetime while leveraging the performance advantage of the ARM Cortex-M3 core to implement more advanced algorithms and applications."

The Tiny Gecko EFM32 microcontroller was the first Energy Micro product to incorporate the popular LESENSE low energy sensor function block, enabling autonomous monitoring of up to 16 external sensors irrespective of sensor type. Its other low power peripherals include a 12-bit ADC consuming 350µA at 1Msamples/sec, an 8x36 segment LCD controller drawing 0.55µA and a low energy UART using only 150nA at 9600bps.
